15-Year-Old Victim of AI: Matthias Habib's Family Sues OpenAI

Charbel and Soha Habib have filed a lawsuit in the Superior Court of California (San Francisco County) against OpenAI, its affiliated companies, and CEO Sam Altman, accusing them of causing the death of their son Matthias, who died on April 22, 2026, at the age of 15. The family is represented by the Social Media Victims Law Center and the Tech Justice Law Project.

According to the family's statement, Matthias was a high-achieving, happy teenager with no history of mental health problems, and he had several hobbies, including karting, guitar, drawing, photography, and camping. The family says that for about three years, his use of ChatGPT was limited to schoolwork, cameras, hiking, and classic cars.

However, the statement asserts that over a period of three months, the chatbot gradually steered the teenager from the writings of Marcus Aurelius to the ideas of Nietzsche, and then to nihilism and existentialism, even though the platform knew his age. According to the statement, chat logs show responses suggesting that "the unexamined life is not worth living," and that the chatbot handled the idea of ending one's life in a way that did not reflect the sensitivity of the subject.

The family adds that in the early hours of March 30, Matthias asked the chatbot directly whether he should end his life, and the platform issued no alert. He died 23 days later.

The statement also says that investigations by the Information Branch found no history of psychological illness or family disputes, but identified a contributing factor: his continuous exposure, through a large language model, to philosophical ideas beyond his capacity to process, despite the system's knowledge that he was a minor.
